How I titled this assignment may confuse some people, because in most people’s eyes Michael Jordan is one of the best, if not the best, basketball players of all time. But in his commercial, he discusses how he has failed again and again. He states “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life…” When you look at these statistics, he may not seem like much of a superstar. However, what makes him a true superstar is the fact that he takes these failures as a challenge to work harder and improve. He acknowledges that his failures have made him grow and in turn have made him the successful legend he is known to be. By being able to turn failure into success shows that he has the growth mindset that Dweck discusses in her book.
I believe the reason Jordan said pointed out his numerous failures in the commercial and used the specific scenery he did was to show that someone can go from being viewed as one of the best of all times and having cameras flashing and people fawning over him to being just another person walking by. By being able to not let the failures or others reactions get you down, but instead using those as a reason to further persevere, is what truly makes a person successful. That is what I believe Michael Jordan was hoping to get across to his audience in this commercial.
I like how you said how accecpting failure made him grow and succeed. I agree with you on the fact that he is a growth mindset. Just think about it, if he wasn't a growth mindset, would Michael Jordan still be a household name? Possibly, but probably not. Also, your analysis of the physical details of the commercial are very good and detailed. Awesome job, as usual.

ReplyDeleteOkay, so I couldn't find the edit button, so I deleted my comment when I had to make changes to it.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, obviously MJ is a terrible player, I mean seriously, look at those stats, the guy has a terrible shooting accuracy and isn't clutch at all. I mean come on, Kobe could've made all 9000 of those shots. MJ was just a rebel who was trying to "get back at the man" I mean did you see how much he lost on his gambling addiction. Maybe if he spent less time playing the wheel and more time playing ball he would've hit some of those shots. So yeah, big woop his hanes commercials were better than his play. So yeah, I'd definatly go with the super failure, he was just all hype and marketing thats all...
...Okay so that was all a complete joke. This is the real comment...
I really like your title for this one. I think its interesting how you can pull certain stats from a players career to make them look terrible is interesting, because there isn't a person who wouldn't say MJ was a great player. Just the fact that he kept those stats showed that he knew he wasn't perfect and still had to work. I like your decription of the physical aspects it really shows all the subtle details and symbolism used throughout the commercial. Great post
So I just wrote my whole comment and it didn't send right so I lost it all and have to start over. Awesome. But I definitely agree that Michael Jordan has a growth mindset. If he didn't, then those failures would have devastated him, and he probably would not have become the legend we know today. I'm sure Michael was not happy with his failures, but like you said, his perseverance through them is one of the main reasons he became so successful.
